Basic Prep

Just like any big purchase, it’s important to think a little about some of the key factors for your health plan decision before you get started. After all, we’re talking about your health here, people!

Here are some things you might want to think about:

What are the current (and future) health care needs in your household?
The answer to this question will help you decide if you want to stay in your current plan, or consider other options. Based on what you expect your health needs to be, do you need a plan that offers basic coverage, or one with broader benefits.

Do you want to keep your current doctor?
Networks vary by plan, so be sure to check that the doctors you care about are participating in your plan’s network. Use our DocFind® tool to see if your doctor is in Aetna’s network. If not, you may want to consider a plan that lets you see out-of-network doctors without too much extra cost.

How much can you afford to pay for health insurance?
Knowing your budget can help determine your options. As a general rule, the more you pay per month, the less you’ll have to pay for your health care costs along the way.

What health expenses will the plan cover?
When comparing plans, look to see what services are covered and at what level. Understand how much of your health care costs you will need to pay, in addition to your monthly premium, when considering your plan options. Look for terms like “copay” and “deductible.”
